How to Play Hangman
Hangman is a classic word guessing game for two or more players. One player thinks of a secret word; everyone else tries to guess it one letter at a time. Guess too many wrong letters and the hangman is complete — game over. It's simple to learn, fast to set up, and endlessly replayable.

How to Set Up a Hangman Game
- One player (the host) thinks of a secret word or phrase
- Draw a gallows on paper
- Draw one blank line for each letter in the word — leave a space between words if it's a phrase
- Players take turns guessing one letter at a time
Hangman Rules
- If the guessed letter is in the word, write it above every matching blank
- If the guessed letter is not in the word, draw one part of the hangman figure
- The standard drawing order is: head, body, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg — that gives players 6 wrong guesses before losing
- The guesser wins by completing the word before the figure is fully drawn
- The guesser loses if all 6 parts are drawn before the word is solved
Tips for Picking a Good Word
The best hangman words are long, have uncommon letters, and don't follow obvious patterns. Words with lots of vowels are usually easier to guess — words heavy on consonants like Z, X, Q, and J are much harder. For ideas, check out our curated list of the best and hardest hangman words.
Tips for Guessing Smarter
Start with the most common letters in English: E, T, A, O, I, N. These appear in the majority of words and will quickly reveal the shape of the answer. Avoid low-frequency letters like Q, Z, and X until you have a clearer picture of the word.
